Recently developed technologies such as “No-Blast” are helping us to provide coating solutions in some new and exciting applications.

Maintenance coating, almost by definition, takes place “in the field.” Usually, the requirement for surface preparation implies abrasive blasting and this, in turn, implies a host of negative factors: mobilization costs, logistical problems, heavy equipment, noise, containment, cleanup and disposal costs... the list goes on. On some projects, contractors turn to power tool cleaning, which requires less equipment but is slow and laborious.
Enter No-Blast. GemBond Surface Conditioner eliminates the need for abrasive blasting on a variety of substrates from steel to galvanizing to concrete. GemBond looks and applies like car wash foam and is quite safe to use. It’s surprising, then, to realize that it has the unique ability on metal to dissolve rust, oxidation and mill scale within 15 to 45 minutes, revealing a pristine, ready-to-coat substrate. On concrete, it uniquely degreases and etches in one easy step.

When fire destroyed an historic church in the late 1990’s, GemThane was called upon to help renew and protect the building’s key architectural element.

In April 1997, a fire ripped through the church, burning it to the ground. The congregation and the community responded, and construction began on a new building. The reconstruction paid particular attention to the steeple and bell tower, which were to replicate the original 1843 designs. As access to the steeple was limited without a crane, there was a desire to find a protective solution for its surface that would require as little maintenance as possible.
Enter Ross Mitchell, and Madison Chemical. The decision was made to use Madison’s GemThane 1-4 Aliphatic, which has been used on “Mission Critical” maintenance applications for over twenty years. After builders had faithfully replicated the bell tower using photographs of the original, the GemThane-clad steeple was finalized, providing a dramatic focal point to the congregation when the church was reopened in September 2000.

A decade after coating their locations with Madison products, Jiffy Lube has seen their costs dramatically reduced.

In 1999, Madison got together with Jiffy Lube to see if we could cut back on their duty cycle. They were using an internationally-known polyurethane paint on their stores. After 3 years, the paint was deteriorating to the point that the white had turned gray and the red had turned pink.
Now, a decade later, we can report that we not only doubled Jiffy Lube’s duty cycle, we tripled it. The original store in San Antonio, is still going strong. Marcus Duffel, their director of design and construction, reports that stores coated with GemThane continue to look “fresh” and are “holding up well.” He has come to realize that GemThane “is in a class by itself.”
